Maryland has launched the $24 million Road to Careers grant to accelerate training and placement in transportation construction—utilizing Registered Apprenticeship, Pre-Apprenticeship, and Integrated Education & Training (IET) pathways to move job seekers into high-demand roles, such as equipment operators, welders, and skilled trade workers.

About the Grant

Under Governor Wes Moore’s leadership, Maryland’s Departments of Labor and Transportation are funding programs that prepare Marylanders for family‑sustaining careers. The grant emphasizes equity with holistic wraparound supports—including transportation assistance, childcare cost relief, access to mental health services, and funding for necessary employment tools—so more learners can start and succeed.

  • Timeline: Applications due January 23, 2026. Awards announced in April 2026.
  • Total Investment: $24M statewide; initial $4M released by the Maryland Department of Labor.

Who Can Receive Grant Funding

Awards are capped at $500,000 and have a 36-month performance period. The state encourages applications from:

  • Local Workforce Development Areas
  • Community‑based Organizations
  • Workforce Training Providers
  • Registered Apprenticeship Sponsors
  • Adult Education Providers
  • Community Colleges
  • Organizations serving immigrants and refugees
  • Other entities allowable by the Maryland Department of Labor

  • Equity & access: Built‑in support for childcare, transportation, tools, and mental health.
  • Outcomes focus: Clear pathways to higher wages and long‑term employment.
  • Funding mechanics: Up to $ 500,000 per award over 36 months; an early tranche of $4 million is now available.
