CAEP: Building & Scaling Teacher Apprenticeships

Co-published with CAEP. Seven lessons, the tools and templates to run them, and a CAEP alignment crosswalk, for educator preparation programs building teacher apprenticeships inside the structures they already operate within.

What's inside

Co-published with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, which is the part worth pausing on. This is not a vendor playbook that gestures at accreditation. CAEP alignment is built into every lesson, with standards callouts mapped to R1, R2, R3 and R5 and a full crosswalk in the appendix.

You do not need to start from scratch. In fact, you are likely closer than you think.

Most educator preparation programs are already doing pieces of this work through clinical practice, partnerships and coursework. Apprenticeship connects, strengthens and sustains what is already in motion. The premise of all 157 pages is integration, not addition.

The seven lessons

  • 01 Why teacher apprenticeship, why now for EPPs. Opens with a myth versus reality chart worth bringing to a faculty meeting: apprenticeship is only for the trades, it replaces traditional preparation, it lowers rigor, it needs entirely new program approval. Each one answered. Plus a program mapping exercise for finding where you already align.
  • 02 Apprenticeship 101 for educator preparation. What actually makes a Registered Apprenticeship Program, who does what, entry points for EPPs, and a section most teams find the most useful in the book: what EPPs do NOT have to do.
  • 03 Designing programs within EPP structures. Course to practice alignment as Related Technical Instruction, clinical practice as on-the-job learning, scheduling and modality, and how faculty roles actually change.
  • 04 Apprenticeship standards and sponsorship. An optional deep dive into competencies, aligning coursework, RAP registration and Appendix A, and understanding your role as sponsor or partner.
  • 05 Partnerships, roles and implementation realities. Moving from placement to partnership, who owns what in practice, and an honest accounting of the common challenges: scheduling conflicts, inconsistent mentor support, limited coordination time, institutional constraints.
  • 06 Funding, data and sustainability. Where most promising efforts stall. Includes the business case for reframing apprenticeship as a revenue-positive model through tuition and workforce funding alignment, district cost-sharing, and improved candidate persistence.
  • 07 Action planning. Define your focus area, work the 90-day planning template, build your team, and identify the support you still need.

Also inside

  • A readiness reflection and quick start checklist, so a team can find its starting point before reading further
  • A glossary covering the vocabulary that trips up EPP teams: RTI, CPL, journeyworker, faculty of record, ATR, RAPIDS
  • Supplemental templates, an FAQ and troubleshooting section, a resource list
  • The CAEP alignment crosswalk

Two lines that capture the argument

This is not about layering something new on top of your program. It is about integrating apprenticeship into the systems you already operate within.
You do not need perfect conditions. They do not exist. What you need is a starting point and a strong partnership.

Built to be used rather than read: marked up, worked through in a retreat or planning session, and revisited as the program evolves. Reflection prompts and planning tools throughout.

Who it's for

Deans, department and faculty leads, clinical directors and program designers at educator preparation programs. Written for CAEP-accredited providers at any stage, whether you are exploring the idea, partnering with a district or RAP, serving as a Related Technical Instruction provider, or designing an apprenticeship-aligned degree pathway.
